I'm good with theory.
I'm learning the A Pentatonic scale right now.
My teacher showed me it like a solo and now I'm pretty fast for only doing it one week.
I get my distortion pedal today xD
A pentatonic major or pentatonic minor? If you can't answer this question, then you should learn some theory. By the way, if you don't know, it's probably minor.
I think everyone should get some guitar lessons when beginning to play guitar. If you decide within a few months that you aren't learning anything, then either find a new teacher or stop taking lessons. I learned a lot from lessons in the year or so that I took them, but I've learned much more on my own in the 5 years after that. I think guitar lessons are great for building a foundation, but they can only take you so far...

I wish I had guitar lessons. My technique is really bad. I'm pretty decent, though.
IMO the best thing to do is to start out on an acoustic. On an electric you can mask your stuff ups with distortion - on acoustic everyone can hear it.
A mistake is a mistake. Anyone with a good ear will be able to tell if you messed up, whether or not you use distortion. There are ways to mask mistakes with or without distortion, so it doesn't really make a difference. I do agree that you should start on an acoustic, though, just in order to build finger strength and dexterity. The action on most acoustics is much higher than you will see on an electric.
