Thats exactly how you develop your ear. By using tabs to get the general idea and since you can obviously tell it is wrong you fix it. Besides no one here said you can get JUST by learning tabs. I totally agree that to be a good guitarist you should know scales, chords and essentially music theory. However ask almost every self taught guitarist, Tabs are like a gift from god as well as the poor mans way of learning. Telling a new guitarist to only learn by ear will totally put him off of guitar. I really have no idea what kind of qualifications you have although i dont say your intentions are bad, you are blatantly wrong. Once he has become physically and mentally adept at the guitar, that is that you know how your fret fingers and your pick hand should be positioned and exactly have a general idea of how the fret board is (pitch wise) then you being specialized ear training.

If you are going to a teacher they will introduce all of these concepts little by little, almost as you dont notice it and yes they would do scales and ear training much earlier but a having a teacher and teaching yourself are totally different things and require totally different approaches.

Besides what self respecting guitarist uses tabs after the 1-2 year point? By learning with tabs you naturally train your ear and since most tabs are so wrong you will naturally move away from them.

An Epiphone Les Paul.

vouch, this guitar is good enough to start smile.gif
Have you got any friend who knows sth about guitars? If yes then i advise you to try to find a secondhand guitar from a higher shelf.
But then probably you'll add some money to it.

I started off with a fender fat strat, the humbucker made it easy to play rock and sometimes even metal, but the singlecoil was warm and sounded wonderful. I later purchased a seymour duncan invader humbucker for my interest in metal guitar styles. The neck is so thin and the action is perfect. All and all, it's been 5 years and I've still had no problems with it. Perfect guitar.

BC Rich Warlock (bronze) is a great starter for playing metal, dual humbuckers, 24 frets, great tone, and a great neck.
