All the entry levels are basically the same, but the one you have found now is ideal. Look to get him a beginners book, ideally a grade 1 book because it covers playing notes and chords. Have you looked at acoustic?

omg .. no amazon dude ... http://www.americanmusical.com/ <--- much better equpiment ... dont torture the kid ... get a esp mp-50 best beginner guitar ever .. nice solid guitar low action ( jumbo frets make it easier to play for beginners)

insaneguitar.com has every scale and master class you could ever want to learn ( joel wanasek is a great family friend .. man is monster on guitars )

is there a waay i could just buy the guitar only

The amp is needed. Get an acoustic if you don't need an amp, but you must have an amp with electric. It's not necessary after a few years of playing, but it's absolutely necessary to begin with.
