Right, and after a while, you scar nodes on your vocal chords and it will physically alter them, permanently effecting your ability to sing

Sing a lot and a lot. You cannot learn the art without practicing it. Up here in northern Finland I couldn't get to a teacher/coach so I had to learn it the hard way. Been singing in band(s) for ~5 years now and just now I'm starting to learn myself and my voice. Since I stopped playing bass while singing (~half a year ago) I've taken huge steps forward so I recommend you to concentrate on your singing alone.

Experiment different styles. Sing different songs from different genres and don't try to "copy" or sound like someone else. It's just sounds terrible. Sing with your own voice.

Oh, and make sure to warm up your voice before singing "hard".
