sort of, but you two make it sound like all overdrive does is make it louder which is only partially true, what it really does is that it makes the output signal stronger which as you said in your previous post, causes clipping (and more volume, yes)

i didn't say anything about volume :huh:

also, input signal. a boost to the output signal is a volume boost, and you don't generally want to drive the output. gainy pedals usually go in front of the amp's input. although, i've never tried putting them in my effects loop....

so its pretty much just a pedal to balance tone and stand out at given moments?

generally OD pedals have a gain control, a level control, and tone control(s)

basic layout being: gain will give you more grit, dirt. Level gives you more volume. Tone can be strange, but for a cheap one, it's probably a low to high pass filter in that in the left position, it'll cut highs, and in the right position it'll cut lows.
