If your budget is around $400, then your best bet is to look for a used guitar from local music stores. You're a bit below the breaking point of where paying more really gets you a much better guitar.
If you are looking at Squire and Epiphone, consider the guitars Rondo offers - you don't pay for the Fender/Gibson names and designs, you get very similar guitars, sometimes even made in the same factories, for a much lower price. The downside of these is that they usually don't come set up perfectly, so you will need to do some work - at the very least expect intonation, maybe action adjustment (bridge height/truss rod), in rare cases people have said they shimmed the necks. Easily worth it if you know how to do the work and it saves you a lot of money
Fender Standard Strats (Made in Mexico) are $499 new and are really common, you should be able to find one used at or below your budget easily.
Gibson SG Special retails at $699 but you should be able to find those for around $500 - solid guitar, I don't even like Gibsons but I have been playing mine a lot.
ESP LTD 400 series guitars - amazing instruments, quite a few different types, that range from $500-700 new - these are the best guitars in this range IMO, you can often find them used a bit above your price range. Some of the older 300 series are really good, but most of them are mostly a step below. Sometimes you can find good deals from big online stores when they get new models.
Generally these are pretty popular guitars and you should be able to find them close to your price range used.
well ive just asked the most musicstores around about used guitars but they dont sell them :/
maybe eebay has something to me im watching those now for like a year but i think the most guitars get sold there "overprice" ..
