A good guitar will sound like crap in a crap amp.
A bad guitar will sound better than crap in a good amp.
That's the main point.
Then after changing your amp (would suggest a low watt full tube amp for practice), the pickup (active / passive / brand) and the neck type of the guitar (wizard 2 style or gibson round-ish) would be the 2 main things you should look at.
Then after this, the wood type of the neck and body can change the sound a little, but not really on an electric guitar. It's more a feeling preference i guess (i like mahogany light feeling).
Even if 98% of the people will tell you : ''buy this thing, it's really good'', you should always try it to see if it fits your style/needs.
I started with a Ibanez RG321MH + full tube vox amp 30 watts.
