oh my god this forum is so ridiculous with how much you guys invest in being "good"

I know you want to achieve something, but just play guitar because you love music. Don't be some overly competitive douche and end up wanking a mile a minute and hating every second of it.

LOL!! Way to prove you know nothing rofl.

16 is not too late to start being a musician. In honesty, no age under 60 is.

Give yourself a time frame of lets say, 2 years. In those 2 years, aim to learn a variation of songs that are n00b easy to play, to orchestral compositions.

As long as you believe that this is your dedicated instrument, and the one you want to play forever, then you can do anything dude

let me guess, you're one of those kids who listens to yngwie and has a steve vai signature ibanez and spends hours and hours and hours learning sweeping sections. news flash... being a huge shredder doesn't make you a good musician. I've played with probably close to a thousand professional musicians, and the ones that everyone hates, including the crowd, the stage band, the soundguy... is the shredder. nobody cares how fast you can play arpeggios. put yngwie and a ressurected hendrix on the stage and let them battle for the crowd. see who wins.

virtuosity has nothing to do with group musicianship. it says "me, me, me, me, me!!!!" whereas in a group or band you have to be (moreso) in tune with other musicians than with yourself. it's moderately selfless, a concept not many musicians understand nowadays.

i've played guitar 15 hours a day like any super serious guitarist - not saying he can't become a professional. Top level players of any instrument have had an early start though, though "really good" is still attainable.

Please define "a good musician" in an objective context.

...oh wait... You can't. Forget it.

Are you saying that because Hendrix is more popular among mainstream, he is better musician?

1. A good musician is someone who not only knows their instrument and the appropriate repertoire very well, but looks to other musicians within the session and plays off of them. They take their moment to shine, but don't self indulge. A good musician is someone who plays their instrument in a way that meshes appropriately with the other musicians they're playing with.

2. I am saying that his music is, well.. music. Yngwie is (for the most part) just a wank-off guitar player who can play a series of notes so fast that they are incomprehensible to the ear. His flamenco playing is almost insulting to traditional spanish guitar music.. he is a total douchebag who only loves himself. Trying to compare a brilliant songwriter and musical personality to a pretentious, self-indulgent and pompous (musically, as well) "virtuoso" musician is absurd as it is, but in my opinion, Jimi Hendrix is (was) an ultimately better musician than Yngwie will ever be.

You don't have to agree with me; you're entitled to support crappy "artists".
