K thanks guys, I've been looking at online for some of the things you guys suggested. Still looking for more, I haven't yet tried any of them out yet.

Hey, I think since this will be your first guitar, you should buy a guitar to fit with what you intend to practice. There are a couple different types of steel string guitars. The most common kind is the dreadnought, which works for most anything and there's also the Grand Auditorium and Grand Concert which are smaller and work well for fingerstyle playing.

http://www.seagullguitars.com/productcoastfolk.htm something like this would be ideal for fingerstyle playing since it has a wider neck / smaller body.

I play mostly fingerstyle so I am a little more picky about this. The biggest thing most people look at though is the type of wood that the guitar is made of and if it's solid or laminated wood. Just try out a bunch of guitars at a music store to see what sound and style you like best.

i would recommend my yamaha apx (electro acoustic so you can plug it in if you ever wanted to)

really nice to play

btw try not to get a horribly cheap one, although you might think you're getting a bargain, it might actually be more difficult to play + could put you off

Hmm. I don't think I'm looking for an electric acoustic guitar at the moment, but I've been looking around at Martins and Alvarez from these guys suggestion and they range about 500-600 dollars, and around 200-300 for used ones. I'm thinking of getting a used one cause people said they are more toned[mature] and it's best to get a used one as your first guitar.

Do the prices sound fair?

I'm also a bit confused, why are used one less expensive if they are better? Or is it just because people want a new one and having a new one allows them to handle and get used to the new guitar as it ages?

i stand by it in all regards

just bought a seagull s6 and it met expectations (every review and everyone i talked to said it is the best acoustic under 500). it does have the plain jane look but it's a great guitar.

couple others i was looking at were...

Washburn D10S Acoustic Guitar
Epiphone Hummingbird (looked kinda feminine for me =P)
Yamaha FG730S Solid Top Acoustic Guitar

but yeah all top tier acoustics for the price...you just gotta go to a guitar center and try each out and see which feels and sounds best to you. that's the biggest thing
