oop i should clarify. with electric instruments (passice or active pickups) you would almost always want a tube amp. with acoustic instruments you dont want any gain at all, the imput levels come in too hot and work much better with solid state electronics. i have a preamp with a tube in it (with adjustable tube blend), it can add a tiny bit of warmth to any instrument/condensor mic, but once you get past the "2" it sounds like shit. you should hear what happens when i try to plug in a mandolin to my crate tube amp -sounds horrible even with a preamp.
i guess what i meant was that an acoustic with active pickups works ok with a tube amp. i had a junky ovation that sounded pretty good though my tube amp. traded that POS up for a new blueridge BR-160 and couldnt be happier.
