Really? I haven't really experimented with strings, and my Ernie Balls die out in a week or two.

ernie balls are pretty cheapo strings.

elixirs arent that great unless you only change strings once per year.

i love d'addario bluegrass strings for acoustic guitar. they are $7 and sound and feel crisp -nothing in that price range responds anywhere close. the low E, A and D are medium gauge, the G, B and high E are heavy gauge. this is very helpful for flatpicking which doesnt allow as many tricks as electric guitar.

edit: tried looking up gauges but the d'addario site doesnt list them at all. wtf. i also use d'addario for banjo and mandolin. but for violin it must be prim!

wow ur making me want to try out those bluegrass strings now! I switched to heavy about 2 weeks (give or take) ago when I restrung my guitar and it sounds brilliant, and I find it plays a lot better for what I play on it (easier to wrap your hands around heavy strings for fingerstyle). But I'm already at the heaviest gauge D'Addario makes, and I want heavier GBE strings.... hmm... I kinda wish there was a set that is heavy gauge E A D and extra heavy for the G B E?

not sure if there are heavier gauge from d'addario but they do sell packs of singles, like a whole bag of heavy "Bs" or whatever. and yes heavy strings sound better and louder. higher action gives it more punch too, but makes it a bit harder to play.

true =) I keep my action pretty low (just high enough to avoid buzz) and my strings as heavy as possible. It works for the sound I want =)
