100-250$ - Vox Valvetronix 100 Head - its a solidstate tube hybrid modeling, has suprisingly nice tone for its price range, I used to rock one.  very nice for the price
250-500$ - Find a New old stock or good used Sovtek Mig 50 HG or a Sovtek Mig 100 HG, you can sometimes get used JCM 800's for around 500, that look like hell but sounds wicked - peavey valveking
500-1k$ - easy, find a wicked tube amp, if you don't mind buying used you can get a hella good amp for 1000 bucks.

there  although take into account I wasn't counting price for a 4x12 cab, those were just prices of the head.... DONT by a Crate or a Marshall MG, or a Behringer.

Gibson SG is great for medal. Get Epiphone if u cant afford around 1-2k. Also my favs are gibsons but ibanez's are great also

Idk about all that electronical guitar stuff, but tone can be determined by where you are plucking the string.
Listen to how the tone changes when you play really close to the bridge, and then try listening to it when you play the note up towards the fretboard.
Probably not very useful information for a metal guitarist though. Too much distortion for that sort of mastery.
