I usually play through that pain. I also play on 13s.

Why would you play on 13s?

I'm a blues player. So the gritty dark sound/feel of the 13s really helps my music.

I started off using 10-48 and tuning down a full step, eventually worked my way to 11/15/22/32/44/60 for CGCFAD, though I usually go for .002 lighter on each of the bottom 3. For a while I used the ridiculously heavy strings to tune down a lot and build finger strength. I enjoy the somewhat heavier strings, especially the plain steel .022 third string for bending, I like being able to exert a lot of force (beat up) my strings without knocking them out of tune, and I like having legato playing ring out a bit more without sacrificing intonation.

It takes time to increase finger durability though, starting off tuning to standard with a regular 10-46/48 set is good, I often see newer players tuning down and using heavier strings but getting tired/sore quickly. I also like to play bass, so that's great for my fingers.

haha I do the same when I'm playing drums, but imo it's a bit different with guitar :)
I can play guitar for hours and my fingertips will start to hurt so bad I can't go on.
But with drums, I can play for hours, and start getting blisters, but I can still go on :)
