Rofl

I hate metallica

Maybe lessons are more important for classical or jazz musicians, but I'm guessing from what this guy said so far, he doesn't play that.

So i go back what I said, if you have a good ear and basic understanding of music to begin with, you don't need a guy telling you what scales to play.

People who get too absorbed into lessons are the noobs who sit at guitar center and play blues riffs with shitty pentatonic scales

If you dont know theory,
you will never succeed with guitar.

Theory is such a huge word that what you just said doesn't mean anything.

Obviously if you don't understand basic time signatures, chord structures, and rhythyms, you will suck but you don't need lessons to learn that.

I had done same thing as you. I started off playing without lessons but Imo you need to get lessons. You work on proper form, learn music theory (modes penatonics etc etc) and you get 1on1 work with your playing. Lessons will help you progress alot faster, smoother and open many doors for playing.

He can probably learn the proper techniques/theory online from youtube videos/articles if he's really serious about guitar :)
Anyone who's dedicated and willing to practice everyday will do fine w/ online lessons, they don't need some instructor there holding their hand =)

Once you get going and feel confident, I would recommend stop taking formal lessons and explore on your own.

It's one thing to be taught theory, but the problem is there is really no way for a teacher to only teach theoretically, and not impose some personal techniques and styles.

Over time your own creativity and ideas get limited cause you only know the way to play your instructor taught you.

Learn on your own and let your creativity flow!!!

I haven't taken any lessons as of yet -- I think I'm making good progress. I'm working at it, keenly watching others play, figuring out where I'm going wrong technique wise etc... I play about 3 hours a day, but the thing is that I've learned Indian Classical music for about 9 years -- so I have a trained ear, a trained voice, tempo / rhythm etc... I may not be able to read Western notes, but I know theory (not that much of it applies well to guitar since my lessons were vocals). The important thing to remember is that you may feel confident -- but you will never truly know if you're going wrong until you have someone correct you to the point where you can start figuring out what you're doing wrong.
