anyone else know of any other useful things?

Start slowly, make sure both your hands are synchronized.
Use a metronome.
Don't rage.
Have fun!

mute all other strings besides the one you are currently playing at ALL times.

don't want to start any bad habits.

sweep picking is pretty easy...

start with a metronome

start with understanding the arpeggio and chord you are playing

if you take music theory you should be able to understand arpeggios sooo easily.

for example c major would be
c e g
and just repeat c e g in octaves
c eg ceg ceg etc

it's all about understanding the chords

see this is where i start to lose any sort of credibility.

well... by now... ive just figured that the way i hold the pick has something to do with it too.
if i put the pick more angled toward me, its easier to sweep pick and its a sharper/clearer sound.
im just doing 3 string:

12 - 12
13 13
14 14

Job for a cowboy's " Entities " song has a solo with sweep picking at the end, it's the first sweep picking I ever learned, it's really easy. Just look up the tabs on ultimate-guitar.com

As far as tips go, don't pick every string out, start slowly but make sure your motion is fluid, and goes all the way through. I wouldn't reccomend muting the strings as you learn, as it's a bad habbit to get into.

Try doing :

----------13^17h^13
-----15------------------15
14---------------------------14

It's a simple fraction of the E Minor Arpeggio and was one of the first I learned. It's fun and easy to play and practice with. That solo I mentioned above uses E Minor a lot, it's one of the easier ones to play and is very popular in DeathMetal/DeathCore bands, as is A Minor, but I wouldn't reccomend starting with that one :P

If you get bored of that one, or A Minor ( You can find tabs for them on the net easily ) I'll show you Diminished and a few others. Diminished is probably the most popular Death Metal scale of all time, and is in tons of famous DM songs/solos, like The Exorcist solo from Possessed, the solo from Infecting the Crypts by Suffocation, and too many others to name.

I'm self-taught, and only learn chords/scales that interest me, but I'm educated enough to discuss/teach many people about it. If you have questions, you can ask me :D

i worded that wrong, i mean from him,

saying sweeping is ONLY about the arppegios and not the actual technique, bullshit.

and how is muting a bad habit? unwanted string noise is the bane of sweep picking
