Dust in the Wind - Kansas
More than a Feeling - Boston
Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana

These are a few of the first ones I learned, I tried to pick some that are generally recognizable.

Some good easy songs there. I think the first song I learned on guitar was crazy train. It sounded like shit for a long time.

Nirvana is easy and it is garbage I agree. The only beef I have with your post is the fact that you should
never tell a beginner to play Metallica. The first song I learned was Nothing Else Matter's. The best way
to better your playing abilities is to learn harder material. I've met people who have been playing seriously
for 4 year's yet can't even play the simple finger picking in Nothing Else Matter's. The more difficult the better
with beginner's, it will show how committed you are to the instrument you've chosen. But if your not serious at
all then yeah I agree play Nirvana.
