If you really want to know how to shred, learn some scales, and start playing them in creative ways. Nobody wants to hear you run up and down scales at even intervals (refer to every trivium solo off of the ascendancy album), but if you can make something creative and musical then you are on the right path.
I know 4 different sweep patterns, two 5-string ones, and two 6-string ones, and several variations of each pattern, I just don't know any of their names, except for A Minor. When I said I could sweep expertly, I meant just that. The technique itself is easy for me, and I haven't had any trouble with it yet, albeit a few patterns I haven't mastered fully yet.
