You definitely can't sweep expertly if you don't know scales. That is unless you're the only person in the world with an exquisite knowledge of chord and arpeggio shapes but none of scales.

If you really want to know how to shred, learn some scales, and start playing them in creative ways. Nobody wants to hear you run up and down scales at even intervals (refer to every trivium solo off of the ascendancy album), but if you can make something creative and musical then you are on the right path.

I know 4 different sweep patterns, two 5-string ones, and two 6-string ones, and several variations of each pattern, I just don't know any of their names, except for A Minor. When I said I could sweep expertly, I meant just that. The technique itself is easy for me, and I haven't had any trouble with it yet, albeit a few patterns I haven't mastered fully yet.

That's what I thought, which is why I linked the neo-classical article. its really easy to link harmonic minor with Sweep arpeggios. also its easy to link the phrygian-dominant harmonic minor with the natural minor scale

can you play arps that require sweep picking combined with alternate picking?Something like Paganini's 5th caprice would require that. Then also, sweep picking combined with tapping, like when you tap say 17-21-17---and back to sweeping. I couldn't master that perfectly, but I barely even play now so w/e.

Sweeping with alternate picking I haven't tried much of. As for sweeping w/ tapping at the end, I mastered that a few months ago tongue.gif I do it all the time now to show off, lol.
