Mostly standard but for some Pink Floyd/Tool/Foo Fighter etc I'll drop D.

I do a std C for SoaD although they use drop C.

A couple Zep songs are in open C so I'll tweak to that on occasion.

for anyone who's in a band, who writes their own material or just do covers, what are you usually tuned to? and what type of music do you play.

on guitar, we're usually tuned to either:
normal c
drop c
drop a
or drop a# (only for in flames and jfac)

all metal, and sometimes like a moderate crunch type of melody thing backing an acoustic layer.

It depends what your vocalist can cope with. Personally, if i was fronting a band i'd ask everyone to tune down to D or Drop C so i could sing along with it. It depends on the vocal range partially, but mainly it's done for live performances. Think about Hetfield. S&M was tuned down to D so that he could hit all the notes and not strain his voice.

It's a clever thing really. I personally like Drop D tuning.

well said, its about making the other band members sound good with you, not just the guitar tone.

Standard or Drop D on the rare occasion. Light gauge strings .010-.046.

no you don't understand, the terrible intonation is what makes the sound so incredible.

Wtf? Are you serious or is this a joke? >.<

I usually switch back and forth depending on my mood.

Standard
1/2 Step Down
Drop D
Standard D (DGCFAD)
Drop C (CGCFAD)
Open G (DGDGBD)
Open D (DADF#AD)

Just Change it up. Right now I'm tuned to Drop C

-Standard
-Drop D
-Dropped down two steps (CFA#D#GC)
- and sometimes (BF#DAEB) (sounds good with lots of crunchy distortion)
