Basically it's a song that Rezso Seress composed with the notion of mourning for his loved one (lover if I recall correctly). Eventually he jumped off of his building.
What's so strange about this song is that it made so many listeners (Hungarians) sad that they started killing themselves over this song as well, usually leaving a note behind entitled 'Gloomy Sunday'. Pretty creepy if you ask me.
If you wanna listen to it, listen to Billie Holiday's adaptation to it, her voice (imo) truly conveys the true feelings/mood of the song.
Edit: Oh yea, and the song was eventually banned from the radios in Hungary and in many other countries due to the suicides it was responsible for.
