i am fairly new to the bass guitar and need some songs to learn that arent as easy as smoke on the water but arent as hard as what Paul D'Amour does..

Iron Maiden - Wickerman. May not be entirely bass prominant, but the bass part is chuggy and carries the rhythm the entire time. In fact, every Maiden song is this way lol.

Red Hot Chilli Peppers have a fair amount of counter point provided by the bass. Soul to squeeze comes to mind.
I've always loved this tune:

If you really just picked up a bass, don't try to learn complete Iron Maiden songs. (some riff are easy tho, so try some;))
What type of music do you like? It's much more fun to learn a song from a band you like.

When i started, i remember learning some Red hot chili peppers song. They are groovy, easy to learn (standard tuning) and they will make you practice some basic techniques.
Check out these songs : "Snow" and "Californication".

A few favorites are early Black Sabbath songs. Paranoid is probably one of the easiest.
