I'm not sure if you can get an american strat for 500 without some hunting, but I could be wrong.

You might be able to get a used Fender American Standard for $500 (seller would have to be close to desperate) but I'm almost positive after some searching you could get a used Fender Highway One or a Fender American Special (Maybe. Just realized they jacked the price up on these) for around $500. You could also look into telecasters (American Standard, Highway One, American Special) for Ska type music or just about anything with single coils. I think a good clean amp and clean sounding guitar will do you just fine for ska. If you wanted to save some money you could look into Squier's Classic Vibe Strats or Tele's. I hear very good things about them and have been looking into buying a Classic Vibe Custom Tele to cover my single coil needs.

Just keep searching and haggling.

Good Luck

For Ska dude, a Gretch hollow-body would be good. Got alotta boom in it's sound!

Obviously, a strat will do the best, but you gotta get some more cash if you want an american one.

american made gibsons have always been used for the best reggae/ska. are you talking about traditional ska or some kind of ska-fusion? if the latter then it doesnt matter what you use imo. friends dont let friends play ska-core.

I found a "used" (basically brand new b/c whoever had it before me didn't play it at all) American made Fender Strat for $300 at a local guitar shop.

I like it a lot. :D
