I got a crappy old 2006 squier jazz bass, and in the 4 years I have owned I have never had it set up or re stringed

Curious as to what the total cost would be to have it:

Adjusted (action/truss etc)

edit: typo in title

People who *know about it

Fret Adjustments? (Not sure how this works)

Cost of new strings (pref flatwounds) + Restringing

Cost to have the tone knob fixed/replaced possibly (it is broken)

I know that I should do it myself, but I am learning too much shit right now to worry about learning even more stuff

If anyone has experience and could lmk, I'd appreciate it.

Because I don't want to pay a lot of money to fix a bass that's worth at most like 150-200$

Setups run $50-$90. This'll cover truss, intonation, action preference, cleaning and re stringing. To replace frets is about $8-$10 per fret, but to have all the frets crownd probably run you at least $200 probably closer to $300. To fix a tone knob would either be minimal additional cost or no cost with a set up. Just to fix the knob is usually minimum bench charge which range from $20-$50.

Strings...$25+ pending on brand.

I guess it depends how much you like yours. (A set from a decent tech will make it feel new again!) Consider this...

Estimate $60 for a set up plus strings, $100 for your bass in tip top shape.

or

Sell your bass for about $80-$100, buy a new bass, (in order to get something 'better' than the one you have you'll have to spend) $350 for a new bass. So spend $250-$300 for a bass that's one step up, or $100 to refurbish and get a year or 3 outta your current bass.

OOOooorrrrrr...

Suffer for a bit and save some dough. If you know you're into playing and you want to stick with it, it is nice to own nice gear. Even if you don't go pro, it's just nice. Like a nice TV. The day I bought my first piece of professional musical equipment, I became a better musician!

I was thinkin the same thing

I've been in the market for a newer bass for awhile, though my price range still isn't that great....300-400$

but I just think anything would sound better than this squier....though I really need a new amp as well

Imo if you want to be a good player you should probably learn to do these things yourself. And at four years old I can't imagine you need new frets yet. Maybe a new nut would be good.

Man, I wish I could dedicate more time to learning bass

I'm still a bit of a novice and probably won't have a teacher any time soon....

But I still practice with my band who are around the same skill level

So what do you guys think I should do?
