Any duncan will be better than any EMG, even the 81/85 combo. Blackouts are good, but I don't really like active pups all that much. You'd be better off with a JB/Jazz combo.

EMG's have shit for tone, and anyone who tells you otherwise is either new to guitar, or who's favorite band is Metallica/Some other band endorsed by EMG

Duncan has amazing tone on most of their pickups. I personally haven't tried Blackouts, but in my experience, active pickups generally sound shitty, and overly distorted. If you're looking for aggressive distortion, just buy an overdrive pedal to use on your dirty channel. This way you can maintain heavy distortion, without sacraficing your tone.

If you're into Hard Rock, I assume you're going to want to be using the clean channel here and there, and if that's so, do NOT buy active pickups, because you will not achieve a decent clean tone. JB/59's by Duncan are great for everything, from Blues, to Thrash Metal, and everything inbetween.

Source : Guitar player of 4 years, own two guitars, one with a jb/59 set, and one with an emg81/85 set.

Yet you don't know what you're talking about are you? EMGs have a very good tone if you're aiming to play metal only because I agree that the CLEAN tone is shit. Otherwise, they are really good. No I'm not new to guitar and no my favorite band is not someone endorsed by EMG.

Seriously, everyone on these forums is bashing on EMGs yet they have a better tone than A LOT of the dimarzios/SD with their high gain outputs.
