i agree with this.
you should take the time out to learn very expressive and melodic solos by some of the greats. when you learn how they form those solos, it will definatly help you make a very awesome and tasteful metal solo
i would recommend just about any solo from pink floyd.
you should also try to work on you coordination between your hands. what i do quite often, is run a spider up and down the entire neck slowly, then gradually speed up.
if you dont know waht that is, you're basically extending your hands to coordinate between you pick and frets, but also streching your hand out. when i do this, i use double picking (which has just become second nature to me) and you just use each finger to fret the notes chromatically, then once you're on the 4th fret, slide up a fret and go up a string, and go again.
do them up and down, and soon enough, you'll be able to play very fast speeds with very good clarity.
