what's the best brand of guitar to get? i've heard alot about gibson and fender

It's a matter of opinion, really, but of all the guitars I've played my favorite is the Les Paul Custom. (Gibson)

GL affording one though they're around 4,500 last time I checked

well ... once you get into high-end guitars its mostly preference.

for around $400 you can probably find a used fender american standard strat or tele or at least buy a new mim strat or tele. fender is my brand of choice. perfect necks and sound imo. everyone has their opinions and not everyone has the same sounding or feeling guitars even though they may even be the same make/brand. try some out man, give them all (in your price range at least) a shot. i enjoy playing every guitar. whether it be a $100 squire or a $4,000+ custom guitar, they all have their place. i've played many nice guitars, and i own a couple nice ones too, but seriously the cheapest one i own remains my favorite. my mim tele is my baby. although it has upgraded pickups and newer hardware now, it played fucking beautifully with the stock shit. i'd say go with one of those, they're probably the best new guitar in your price range (IMO).

My grandma has a late 70's gold plated les paul. She barely ever plays it (hasnt played it in over 10 years), so it's in great quality. i talked to the guys down at guitar center near my house and they said if it's in good condition maybe 7k or more
