What is eveybody's top 5 for the year so far?

This is what mine looks like, no particular order I suppose:

V. To Be Kind by Swans
IV. Fuck Off Get Free We Pour Light on Everything by Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra
III. Atlas by Real Estate
II. Morning Phase by Beck
I. Familiars by The Antlers

Honorable mentions to Terrestrials by Sun O))) & Ulver, Deep Fantasy by White Lung (I'd include this but it is just too short, like 22 minutes, listened to it twice yesterday and enjoyed the Hell out of it), and Salad Days by Mac DeMarco.

Biggest disappointment of the year for me was Neil Young's new album, A Letter Home, which was an effort to record some older classics (I don't believe he had any original content, maybe a song) in a style mimicking the old time recording with scratches and whatnot which turned out to be contrived as shit. His crappy renditions of those songs definitely didn't help, but he did a very poor job on the covers. Maybe it was something psychological, for example with a legitimately old recording you know it is genuine and you can imagine what the recording process might have been like and can appreciate the flaws almost as something earned, whereas this one had none of that.

Overall I'd say this is a decent year for music, at least from the limited shit I've listened to, but I hear there are some pretty exciting releases yet to come.

about that Neil Young album - it happened because Jack White restored the only complete recording booth made in like 1940 , it sorta looks like a phone booth but records everything and then actually spits out a record.
He probably spent alot of money restoring it. And Neil was partying with Jack White and probably was talking about how it was neat and Jack convinced him to make an entire album and Neil being so nice , prob agreed.

It was a cash grab in the end sure - but kinda mostly a "hmm lets see what this sounds like" and hope it catches on. Some things work out , some dont. Whatever , still worship them.

talking about those guys reminds me of this

My favorite song of the year is gotta be Kinda Akward by The Damn Truth

Because it reminds me so much of two other Rock Gods - Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin.

I love it also cause its pure emotion and anger and thats what alot of music is about

Awesome music + Incredible voice + Simple emotions + Homage to the greats = nothing but pure win.

Also because no one has heard of it either is awesome. Something else to hold over Beielbers.

Only albums I really like is Alcest and Lee Fields

Angel Olsen and Sharon Jones was descent but not fantastic, everything else i've heard range from bad to slightly above average

Swans is not bad but it didn't live up to the expectations created by The Seer which was AOTY 2012.

Badass origin, I suppose, but that album was such shit. I listened to Live at the Cellar Door before that which was phenomenal, so maybe the comparison made it seem even weaker.

@the dude with the blondie avatar -- I liked Alcest's well enough, too, I've listened to it two or three times and I actually enjoyed Be Kind more than The Seer but to be fair I bought Be Kind on CD and had it in my car for a while so I gave it much more of a chance than last year's.

I also listened to the Angel Olsen album but don't remember anything about it lol.
