I agree, Maiden has a larger collection of great songs. But Judas Priest also has more of a metal sound. Judas Priest at their very best are just SLIGHTLY better than Maiden, I think. The Sentinal, Electric Eye, Painkiller... these songs rock harder than Maiden. But I can listen to Maiden from dawn till dusk without running out of material. And if I had to choose one to see live today, it would be Maiden.
And I personally don't like Metallica's sound that much, and I think their musicianship is not up to standard with some other big name metal bands.
They are not #1 in my book.
Clearly you've not seen Metallica live recently then, I have not heard a more tight sounding band - it's one sound live and thats a truly epic thing.
Rob is a beast of a bassist, and Hetfield is one of the greatest frontmen of all time (kirk is just a guitarist, lars is a very lucky spastic)
I don't think that even songs like Painkiller/Electric Eye/Living After Midnight can compete with Wickerman, Run To The Hills, Fear of the Dark, Evil that men Do, Hallowed By The Name etc.
They are different sounds though - Priest at the time were a heavier band, but Maiden aren't about the heavy - they are about the story of the song.
Oh, and no-one needs reminding that Priest have maybe 1 album without a bad song on it, unlike Maiden who have 15 albums of awesome with perhaps 1 bad song on a couple. A couple.
Xfactor is not a bad album, neither is Virtual XI
With Regards to Metallica live, the Big 4 performance was not only one of the best set lists they've done, but the gig itself was outa this world good - well worth the money buying the DVD
