I decided to make a topic to find new music for my collection--and to share some music I enjoy. My iTunes collection contains a somewhat modest 7,000+ songs, and I have a few hundred CDs in my collection as well, but I'm looking to expand it. I haven't been listening to music music much since my sons were born, and my focus will be to find new singer-songwriters. That being said, I listen to just about every genre of music. I believe that great songs tell stories, whether they're about every day life, our emotions, or something else. I grew up on 60s, 70s, and 80s music (mainly 80s on the radio), and I feel lucky for that exposure. Around the 7th grade (let's just forget what year that was!) I got into rap and r&b, and I soon found reggae as well. I jumped into alternative when grunge broke out of Seattle. Once I got into university, I opened up my musical palate and explored just about everything out there for a while. So, I'm all ears.

[Please feel invited to post suggestions. I want to listen to music that people love to hear, and I hope those who provide suggestions might say something about why they chose what they posted.] This is an open music discussion, should anyone choose to drop in and eavesdrop on the conversation.

My pick for today is John Mayer's Gravity. I think it suits him. It has a pop sound to it (let's face it, he's pretty mainstream), it has a great instrumental element, and it's lyrically soft even if it's somewhat deep. He gets into his own internal struggle here. I was going to post Born and Rasied but i changed my mind at the last minute. I believe that John Mayer is a brilliant guitarist. He has a great sense of interpretation of lyrics, whether they're his own/his band's, or something borrowed. Normally people who sing love songs often bother me, but John has remained near the top of my list for a while.

Recently listening to: John Mayer, Wilco, Lecrae (Christian rap), Tool/A Perfect Circle, Death, Jay Z (not a big fan, but good for basketball warm-ups), City and Colour, Tom Waits.

BebebBurns - thanks for the suggestions. The video @ post 3 was my favourite - may look into it more later :)
ChowYunFat - it's really different, and i'm undecided about it. the music grates a bit (cacophony) but it's interesting.

Here's my latest offering (by Wilco):

Like Rush, Wilco remains strong as one of my favourite bands, even after several reconsiderations.

Since you mentioned rap, going to go ahead and throw this song out there. You'll have to listen to both verses to understand what it's about, pretty much how society is/how society should be.

Osirislives - yes, that's them
Noobalator - he's pretty solid, i may need to see if he has some upbeat stuff i can listen to @ basketball warm-ups. impressed by the track , thanks :)
bob(Cs2) - wow, where has he been? instant fan, thanks! :) i should probably check out the "new" blues. sounds like he's been around forever, so i guess i'm way out of the blues loop

It seems that everyone around me hates Tom Waits (except Gary @ d2jsp), but here's a performance that I really love:

I appreciate the song choices posted so far. I will go back to some of this music, and I have a feeling I will purchase some of it from iTunes. I miss my friend Ed (he's living far away, working as a php monkey or something), because he used to introduce me to a lot of new music (15,000+ songs on my university playlist!) :O
