Suburban Kids with Biblical Names,
Mew,
Regina Spektor,
Wall of Voodoo (not necessarily 'indie' but very good),
Ugly Casanova,
Cotton Jones Basket Ride (now known as just Cotton Jones),
and Why? to name a few.

Indie is not even a genre, you'd have to be more specific

As loose a term as it may be, figured it was pretty obvious he meant indie rock

if you wanna use indie as intended it's music released on independent labels, none of the artists mentioned in this thread qualifies.

if you wanna use it as a pre-fix to clump up all non-metal guitarr based music together it's still way too wide, he'd be better of mentioning some bands he like.

tallest man on earth is blues, mbv is shoe-gaze, beirut is music inspired by eastern european folk-traditions.

calling all of theese different styles "indie-rock" makes no fucking sense whatsoever.

just listen to the bands i suggested. your life will be better afterwards.

I took a loose term and recommended artists he's most likely going to appreciate. I'm not gonna neglect to suggest a band because it's "shoegaze." He's going to like it. I'm not going to neglect to mention Beirut just because he's inspired by folk, most likely the OP's going to like it.
If a guy's asking for indie tunes you know what he means, and if good music is being pointed in his direction, who gives two shits.
