Dre's Beats are garbage. They are widely considered a joke, overpriced hunks of plastic, in the music industry. Not even joking, there's tons of threads on audiophile websites bashing the shit out of them, lol.
I've listened to them a few times. Basically, it's a shit ton of muddy bass with no mids and the high's seem cloudy and unclear.
I use a pair of AKG-K702's for playing synth and listening to music. They're probably the best phones I've ever heard. They're lacking a bit in the bass department, but unless you're a fan of dubstep or something with tons of bass, you really won't notice it. The mids are great, but the highs are AMAZING. I hear frequencies in these phones that I've never heard with anything else. They're so precise, I heard new things in songs I've been listening to for years. They're excellent for stuff with lots of subtle nuances. If you want to hear the harmonics, overtones, little floating noises, and everything else that's usually under the radar, I would highly recommend them. They ran me like 268 on eeebay for a brand new pair.
AKG also makes some cheaper ones that are maybe more suited to personal use (K702's are pretty much strictly a studio phone, they're really big and not great for travel). They have the AKG 240, which is only about 100 bucks, and is also really nice. Don't expect it to sound nearly on the level of the AKG K702, though.
Sennheiser is also really great stuff. Never owned a pair, but I've heard through them and they're fantastic. They're an all-around hi-fi headphone. They don't really specialize, they're just good everywhere. Like the K702's are more focused on highs and mids, sennheisers are just good everywhere, but they lack a specialty.
A lot of it comes down to personal taste, really. Depends on what kind of music you listen to, exactly how much detail you want to here and where in the range you want to hear it, how detailed the music actually IS, all that stuff.
Thanks, I'll look into the first pair you mentioned and I had a feeling about the Beats and thought it would be something like that. Quote (Simens @ Oct 18 2011 10:13pm)
Denon is another company that delivers high quality audio equipment, even tho you don't see them posted often in threads like these.
I own a pair of the top-of-range earbuds they distribute and based on that i'd be surprised if their on ear headphones doesnt deliver some of the best quality your money can buy as well

I'll look into these as well, thank you.
