I'm pretty much a complete novice when it comes to this type of genre. My knowledge is limited to a cursory scan of wikipedia's page, and as you may guess, all the jazz I've listened to are well known names (Parker, Coltraine, etc.).
So far in my short search I've found that I really like The Dave Brubeck Quartet - Take Five. I'm looking for other songs like this. I really prefer instrumental songs, but just about anything is okay.

If any of you have watched Cowboy Bebop the anime, the intro is also the type of jazz I like (bebop I believe).

Point me in the direction to some truly great jazz!

Ha. That happens to be my all time favorite Jazz song. True story. :)

Pretty much anything off the old Blue Note catalogue is gold. Pick an artist at random, and look 'em up on YouTube.

This album, along with anything else by Grant Green (at least from what I've heard) is very good stuff. I recommend it.

Here's perhaps the most famous album by the multi-instrumentalist Eric Dolphy, some good stuff here.

Here's some good Eastern jazz right here. I've seen it described as sounding like "crossing the desert at night" and I find that assessment to be very appropriate. Highly recommended.

Along with these I want to ask what you've heard by Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Charles Mingus. I say get anything by these artists but in particular go for these:

Miles Davis:

Kind of Blue, Sketches in Spain, Bitches Brew, In a Silent Way, Birth of the Cool.

John Coltrane:

A Love Supreme, Blue Train (my personal favorite), Soultrane and Giant Steps.

Charles Mingus:

Blues and Roots, The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady, Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus, Mingus at Antibe, and Mingus Ah Um.

Thanks for all the help so far. I'm currently not on my "music" computer, but will be sure to download a lot of these albums.
