where should i look for relatively cheap CDs? there are literally no record stores in my state, and i don't know where else to look if i don't want to pay $12-$15 a CD

Spend the money youre going to spend on cds on a new headunit. Get one with an aux input for your ipod or phone.

This.

But if folks must insist on buying CDs, I'd go to Hastings. The bargain bin there supplies me with almost any music that can't be found online at a buck a disc (I listen to a lot of obscure shit).

Second thought. Try different brands of blanks. My old head unit wouldn't play maxell cds, but it would play any other brand.

the funky thing is that i would have to buy new speakers if i get a new headunit. my speakers/headunit are a stock bose system and it's something about the input/output levels of the signals being low(between the speakers/headunit), so if i get the headunit replaced the audio would be out of whack. the system isn't amazing but it isn't bad either...don't really want to spend the money to replace it

as far as using different CDs to burn with, i tried a few already. each time i put them in it sounded like a demon screeching in the player

thanks for the hastings/amazon references. i'll definitely use them in the future
