I agree, Mayhem is a sucky band. I'm just pointing out that not 1 person can say what is 1st best, 2nd best, 3rd best, etc. It's all in the eyes of the metaphorical beholder.



Eh, you can't say the pioneers of something are worthless because without them the thing itself might not have spawned.
Black Sabbath is an awful fuckin band, but if you tell me you think they never should have existed whilst being ignorant to the fact that the metal scene today without them would be different or perhaps even non-existent, I'm going to laugh in your face.

yeah ofc i am not undermining the importance of the pioneers at all. what im saying is that they are more popular and easy to find, which is why they are regarded as the big names of metal. but, as metal has grown so big, better bands have emerged (statistically speaking) and they are not as noticed in the general populace of metal because they are harder to find. my point is that people who have dug deep into genres, listening to every band they can possibly find, tend to hold certain bands in higher regards as opposed to others. and these are the people whose opinions really matter, because they have the broadest perspective. and if they pick a few bands consistently, then that must say something to the quality of those bands

I think tbh Satyricon, Burzum, Mayhem, Darkthrone, Borgir, Emperor and many more were all REALLY REALLY good when they started out but eventually they all moved closer towards the mainstream in later years, which im not a huge fan of.
