those bands are more like pioneers than pinnacles, you hear about em because they were the first ones and popular
it's more of a statistical improbability for those bands to be the best, but since they were first and most popular they get revered above most others. there are definitely musically knowledgeable people who will call those bands worthless. i've gone to a lot of metal forums for about 3 years now and i've noticed a few bands that people who really have dug deep into various metal genres will put on another level
