I've kinda grown out of metal. It's a whole lot of the same, after a while. Finding new bands wasn't exciting as it used to be, because metal is compressed into this tiny little box of possibilities. It's just not a very expansive group of genres, once you get down to it. That said, I still enjoy listening to it from time to time, but mostly Prog, Folk, Black. I enjoy BM that isn't all "Raw raw blasphemous shit satan satan ahhhh anti jesus shit on the virgin marys vagina", that gets really tiring. Anti-religious/spiritual music is just as bad as any fundamental christian country music. Lyrical themes in metal are more stagnant than an unflushed port-o-potty at the fair. Death Metal is even worse. They hardly ever discuss aspects of death, or anything philosophical or interesting. It's all just " GRRR I DIG UP CORPSES AND FUCK EM IN DA BUTTTTTT THEN I RIP THEIR ENTRAILS OUT AND USE THEM AS A HAMMOCK TO SWING IN THE MOONLIGHT IN THE GRAVEYARD!!! " I'll listen to Metal again when it comes out of it's little hidey-hole of "Tr00 kvlt" bullshit and begins experimenting with new sounds and ideas.

Rap and Hip-Hop is too culture based for me to enjoy. I don't want to hear about other peoples problems, how hard their life was growing up in the hood, how many people they've killed, or how much they enjoy various concoctions of purple drank. I realize there is Rap/Hip-Hop out there with interesting lyrical themes, I just don't enjoy the beats enough and get bored listening to somebody talk about stuff that isn't really that profound.

It has become difficult to find new music nowadays for me in metal, but thats why i've branched into Blues and more guitar based music.

The fact you enjoy Black Metal says alot considering that what, 95% of it IS anti-religion music, and the rest is about violent death.

Nowadays - it's become very screamo orientated and widdly - I consider it unnecessary. however, Rock and heavy metal are doing well, bands like Black Label Society, Black Country Communion all keeping the music of a high quality. Added to that - lots and lots of blues coming out nowadays, including female artists who are just damn impressive to have a black woman soul voice, and clapton-esque guitar chops, it's a good thing.

Surprised?

Do the right thing and go back to NWOBHM. I thought you loved Maiden?

Exactly - Maiden are still doing a great thing for metal. There are also new bands out there who are sticking to an 80s metal theme rather than this nu-age stuff

Not at all, but it did take more than 2/3 listens.

I listened to it 8 times before I decided it was an "ok" album at best. It has a couple of AWESOME songs on it, and live some of the songs are epic - but the album is a new direction for the band. Everyone used to bitch "iron maiden is just gallop gallop gallop big vocal gallop gallop gallop."

Now those same lame ass bitches are crying because they've decided to branch from the gallop gallop into syncopated rhythms, more meaning in the songs and more of an epic vibe. Don't fear the change, accept it.

Rap is a bunch of monkeys talking shit to each other walking around grabbing there crouch.
Metal is brutal and makes me day dream about killing people.

Better?

Eayser to laugh at people then to write down what you actually think of something.

Theres alot of layers to it because each "track" is doing its own thing... you can focus on listening to the drums or the guitars or just the vocals, and there each doing something different but making a song out of it. Maybe im the only one who listens to metal like that.. i dunno, i find it hard to believe that im the only one who listens to it like that.
Why would i wanna download ableton and do that.. its not something im interested in. I would rather eat glass then do that..

I'm just saying making music on a computer is a very complicated process, and is in no way degrading to a musician's/producer's credibility.

Anyway, I know what you mean by layers. Ableton is entirely devoted to layers. You design tracks then stack and EQ them together. I know you probably won't like Deadmau5, but listen to some of his older tracks like Brazil, Arguru, or 16th Hour. There are tons of layers and little subtleties to pick out. One of the most interesting things about Deadmau5 is that a lot of his loops/layers are on different time grids. If you separate them into their constituent parts, they sound arhythmic. It's fascinating how synthesis creates an entirely new and focused rhythm. Someone like Nosaj Thing uses a lot of subtleties as well, but he's more about minor changes than complex, a-rhythmic layering. I'm just saying I've heard a lot more complex (as far as layering is concerned) genres than metal. Again, this is not to discredit metal, or convince you to stop listening to it.

As somebody who's played a lot of metal in his life, there are way, WAY more layers in electronic music. I'm not even sure why you'd think metal has more, it doesn't make sense by any accounts, lol. Derkaderk's reference to Deadmau5 is pretty bad however (No offense), as it's some of the most simple electronic music out there.

What? There's plenty about the occult, mysticism, astral projection, and many other interesting topics. If you read the lyrics, and understand what they mean, a lot of BM isn't about that. Not every BM band is Marduk, ya know.
