[COLOR=green]They went in a totally different direction when they picked up Bruce over Paul electing to make over-the-top metal that can fill stadiums instead of a more punk oriented type of music which probably would appeal to a smaller audience. I wonder what would have happened if they didn't ever pick Bruce up and instead went in the punk direction, maybe then we wouldn't have 20 or so albums that are basically the same thing. To me Killers was the best the band could have produced and they never came close to what they made on that one again even if they released several albums worth listening to.

But... they're not a punk band and I don't think that was their goal either way.
You're making it sound like they sold out or something, but you are in no position to proclaim that they changed styles to "fill stadiums." Maybe they just didn't want to be a punk band? Besides, it was straight up metal and doesn't even resemble the power metal anthem-oriented shit that ruled the 80's. I don't think I've ever even heard Maiden played on the radio, at least not on the local classic rock stations that play metallica and zeppelin nonstop.

Oh and their debut album is generally considered superior to Killers.

And lets show some love for Priest. Priest was better than Metallica too, I think.

MAIDEN all the way. That's the only flag I hang in my room is the killers album flag.

I didn't say they were a punk band but there is no doubt that there's a strong punk influence on Killers. I'm also not saying they sold out because, like you said, they've failed to reach a mainstream audience on the radio, television, etc. (well, I've seen them on VH1 and whatnot but very rarely). I am saying their work with Bruce allowed them to reach a wider audience and as a result their tours were far more successful. If I remember correctly there was an issue with touring with Paul in general because he wasn't allowed in the States or some shit.

@ the bold -- I just disagree. Popular opinion would have you believe the Black Album is Metallica's best which it most certainly is not.

I also happen to prefer the debut to killers.
