The Minibrute looks really neat, but something about the tone just doesn't grab me. I think, actually, if I had the cash, I'd try and get a used Access Virus TI Desktop. I used to really hate the virus sound, but I've heard it put to really good use and definitely dig it now. The youtube videos generally make it sound very bland. Or a Roland V-Synth, those look really, really cool. I know Infected Mushroom, Filteria, and I think Solar Fields all use it. Just for the practicality of everything though, I think I might try to go fully software. It's cheaper, much more portable, easier to use. I've been thinking about this a lot. I love hardware, I love the way it sounds, the filters/resonance are so much better imho. I'm just tired of the workflow, honestly. Maybe it's lazyness, I dunno. I'm going to try and get into Reaktor a bit more, it's the best sounding softy I've ever heard.
Yeah I hear you on the Minibrute. It's great that they decided to make an analog mono but still, something about it doesn't strike me the way the vintage analogs do. This constantly perplexes me. It's like everybody is trying to get "that" sound from vintage synths. Why not just make new analog synths that are that awesome??? I don't get it, but I guess it would be harder to sell them in this age of software and then of course, like you say, there is the issue of workflow which has been a huge factor in my decisions as well.
I've been very seriously considering picking up something analog to give some contrast but it's a hard purchase to justify because it's not cheap and it's not easier to use than most software, at least in terms of routing and recording, just takes me out of the passionate flow of creating. I'd be down with a Virus too but to be honest if I'm gonna shell that much cash I'd probably go analog. I feel like software can get pretty close to a Virus sound and it's used largely in psy so it's not the most unique sound but if somebody gave me one to use no fucking doubt I would put it to good use. Similar spot in my view to where a Nord sits, in terms of desirability I guess. There's a V-Synth XT at my school, I'm going to try to see if I can use it for a bit and record some shit off it to put in some tracks, we'll see how that goes, I've never used one before. There's also a Voyager there I'd love to use, just gotta find out what the policy is about students using those.
Have you heard Diva in terms of analog sounding VSTs? I don't know if I mentioned it before or not. It's pretty amazing sounding for software but I cannot find a copy anywhere for Mac. Reaktor is nice too though but I just feel like the Reaktor presets have a very software sound to them but I don't really know how to make my own instruments yet and that's where the real power comes in.
But honestly, who's to say in 20 years we won't look back and be like "Fuck, I want that software sound from the 2000s era!" So I guess I'm trying to be happy with what I have and stop being such a fucking picky bastard about everything. It's too easy to become unsatisfied with x y or z about your track and lose sight that it's just a plain good jam. I guess that's the downfall of being so technical about creating music. Some days I wish I could just get grab a guitar and play it and be happy enough with that...
