Okay, this thread is fucking huge.
I have one question -- do you pretty much need to be high to enjoy this genre or does it stand alone sober?
I'd have to agree with what MakeMetalMusic said in response to this but I felt I could add a bit.
Beyond just being trippy and intense, this type of music has a lot more going for it. It's a very technical art, unlike any other genre that I have encountered in terms of time spent, quality and creativity put into the production and mastering. In this sense, the music takes on a very sort of sophisticated quality. I've always thought of it kind of like how I think about jazz. It doesn't sound like jazz but it holds some of the same qualities like technical ability, strange polyrhythms, time signatures and tempos and a desire to break away from what is mainstream. I personally would say that you have to pick what stands out to you because obviously a whole genre is never exactly what you're looking for, especially in such a radically diverse genre such as this. I can't say I'm in love with every Goa Trance song or anything but within the ideology behind the genre lies something that I connect to on a very personal and spiritual level and when I find a song that quenches that desire for connection it is euphoric.
Particularly, Shpongle drew me to this type of music because of their layered complexity and the fact that I can still listen to Shpongle albums I loved 5 years ago and still find layers of sound I didn't hear before which is always mindbending. I guess that's what you get when your ears are sifting through 200+ tracks. Shpongle is a rare gem among all the psy artists, in my opinion, for the reason of finding a way to break out of what has been done and continue progressing past 4/4 kicks and 140ish BPMs and into something more organic. For me, that is what psy is all about; progression and evolution. It's shown metaphorically through the sound, constant change and evolution. Inside the sound I often find many metaphors between relationships of sounds or tone, color, texture etc. which, to me, shows a very philosophical standpoint in this genre. (at least if you interpret it how I do lol) And the fact that there is usually an absence of vocals which force your focus onto words is also a big plus for me because I don't like the mood of the music to be dictated by a story I may or may not relate to. This way I can float away and feel however I feel about what I'm hearing.
Anyway, I'm not always high when I listen to this music, just like anything in life I guess. I still find great enjoyment out of dissecting and piecing together the music without some herb but smoking while listening can bring on a whole other level of understanding which is often a valuable tool for me when learning from listening. However, like MakeMetal said, tripping is the absolute prime condition to listen to this music in and I obviously enjoy the music outside of my psychedelic escapades. Psy, generally speaking, was built to mirror the psychedelic experience, or at least offer some sort of creative response to it, through creative sound design and so if you ignore the very core of what this music was birthed from and grew from and around, then you're missing a big piece of the picture.
That's my opinion.
