I would agree with this statement. A band's inital and/or sophomore album tend to set a certain expectation. If said band then changes the formula, more often than not, you have people up in arms about it.
Excellent example is Ministry. Al has changed the sound of the band dramatically since it's inception, from cheezy '80s synth-pop, to EBM/Industrial, to pretty much straight-up Metal.
While I was a fan right up through Psalm 69, I lost interest around Filth Pig / Dark Side of the Spoon. While Al's later work was technically tight, he started going in a different direction than I was musically, so I stopped listening.
