I would agree with this statement. A band's inital and/or sophomore album tend to set a certain expectation. If said band then changes the formula, more often than not, you have people up in arms about it.

Excellent example is Ministry. Al has changed the sound of the band dramatically since it's inception, from cheezy '80s synth-pop, to EBM/Industrial, to pretty much straight-up Metal.

While I was a fan right up through Psalm 69, I lost interest around Filth Pig / Dark Side of the Spoon. While Al's later work was technically tight, he started going in a different direction than I was musically, so I stopped listening.

They don't, people just become whiny little bitches when a band gets tired of playing the same sound for years on end.

Thats because they don't frankly care - especially with the lack of real music anymore, who can blame them for staying in the past? The present sucks.,

the fact that absolute garbage like lil wayne, nicki minaj, Carly Rae Jepsen, lady gaga and similar horseshit managed to reach mainstream sucess proves that the opinion of average joe is fucking null
