Emo is a word that should descibe almost every song ever written. I don't think it's possible to write a song without any emotion coming out whatsoever. Therefore, emo is not a genre.

The word emo got started because of a band called "Rites of Spring". They were a hardcore band from D.C. in the 80's and have been labeled the first "emo" band ever.

Guy Picciotto was the frontman of this band and he has some interesting interviews on what "emo" music is or isn't(they're probably on youtube). Guy's philosophy is basically the same as mine btw.

Guy Picciotto also later went on to join the band "Fugazi"(probably the most innovative/experimental punk/post hardcore band of all time) <<< Everyone on this forum should check out the band Fugazi

Name a musical artist, 100% chance their music is emo

"Emo", as applied to the specific musical subgenre, is short for "Emotional Punk." It represents and covers bands that have a particular style (wherein they're usually whining like a bunch of pusses about lost girlfriends.)

To label any music evocative of emotion as "Emo" is incorrect at best, and fraudulent at worst.

well it isnt that simple

there are 5 different genres of emo music

1. emo-rock
2. emocore
3. pop-emo
4. emo-punk
5. emo-black-metal

and youll hear emo-nintendocore be thrown around by people, however, it is not an official genre as the ones listed above are

I've never listened to that band, but I am aware I would not enjoy it if I did.
