I was told that I needed to gain approval for posting bandcamp links - approval is not required for youtube or soundcloud links.

What is Bandcamp? Bandcamp is an online music 'store' which many independent artists use to release music. It is widely used by artists who create all genres of music. The site offers streams of the music and an option to purchase the music. Often, the artists list their music with a 'name your price' feature which allows customers to purchase the album for what it is worth to them. Other times, it is simply given away for free or a regular fee is required. It is a fairly revolutionary medium which A LOT of artists are taking advantage of. It takes the power away from major record labels, encouraging diversity and independence amongst the artists who use it. I would happily post a link to the site, but I have not yet received approval to do so.


The same can be said about artists who use facebook to distribute music for promotional purposes - they are paving their own way without the need for major record labels, again, encouraging diversity and independence.



Posting youtube videos all the time is fun and all, but wouldn't it be nice to share music that artists are giving away for free? Music that you could put on your ipod/etc? I was told be the moderator that I was posting links of pirated music and, unfortunately, the idea of 'free music' might be alien to more than just him. I think it's important in the evolution of the music industry, and dare I say, music in general to recognize and acknowledge the practice of giving away music for free (or through a 'name your price' feature) as it is an important step in the right direction for musicians AND consumers.

Free =/= pirated. The assumption is not beneficial to the community.

EDIT: I didn't mean to be mean in the poll questions. You're not dumb if you don't know what Bandcamp is...I'm sorry. I am just frustrated with this moderator right now -___-

I don't know enough about bandcamp to have an opinion, but anything that takes power away from the labels is okay in my books.

i know nothing about metal, so I can't vouch for the quality...but I think you can imagine how Bandcamp could be such an amazing thing for artists and consumers. A lot of people seem to put out compilations and, unfortunately, sometimes the compilations can contain material which was not permitted by the artists. It is fairly uncommon, in my experience of using the website (I have only heard of it happening once and in that case, it was a miscommunication between the artist and curator of the compilation that was corrected quickly).

The problem they wont check every link in the thread if users start to post links this will be terribile thread for moderate.

Why would they need to check the links? Bandcamp is a safe website..

and a good outlet for independent labels to release and sell music. check out sublimatedsounds, 3 recent eps this past few weeks - cjbroad, cuddlemonster, and goosensei

Safe to say whoever's moderating this sub-forum has their finger far from the pulse of modern music culture. Bit baffled Bandcamp's been put on the backburner here. And what was up with that "Best discogs in hip-hop" thread that got closed?
