Ok, so I am considering taking some of my money and investing in a high quality set of headphones. I will likely want to spend like 200-250 or so, if I decide to do this, so am wondering if anybody knows a lot about headphones.

I am currently using these:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Koss+-+Pro+DJ100+Professional+Over-the-Ear+Headphones+-+Black/9745789.p?id=1218165774336&skuId=9745789

Which are great and they have a lifetime warranty, so that's awesome, I am just looking to get a really high quality set.

My second question is what is everybody's opinion on Dre's Beats? I have heard a lot of negative things about them and naturally assume they are marked up because of their name. I can probably get a set for half the retail price on Craig's List, I am just wondering if they are worth that.

Dre beats aren't the best but aren't the worse either depending on which one u get
I used to have the Beats Pros (the 400 dollar ones) and they sucked. They didnt sound good, no noise cancelation, and heavy as fuck, super uncomfortable after 45 mins.
if you are gonna get beats get the Studios. you gotta feed em batteries but they suond nice & the noise cancelation is good.

Those seem like the same quality of my set, I might just keep them and buy a new t.v. or something.

Dre's Beats are garbage. They are widely considered a joke, overpriced hunks of plastic, in the music industry. Not even joking, there's tons of threads on audiophile websites bashing the shit out of them, lol.

I've listened to them a few times. Basically, it's a shit ton of muddy bass with no mids and the high's seem cloudy and unclear.

I use a pair of AKG-K702's for playing synth and listening to music. They're probably the best phones I've ever heard. They're lacking a bit in the bass department, but unless you're a fan of dubstep or something with tons of bass, you really won't notice it. The mids are great, but the highs are AMAZING. I hear frequencies in these phones that I've never heard with anything else. They're so precise, I heard new things in songs I've been listening to for years. They're excellent for stuff with lots of subtle nuances. If you want to hear the harmonics, overtones, little floating noises, and everything else that's usually under the radar, I would highly recommend them. They ran me like 268 on eebay for a brand new pair.

AKG also makes some cheaper ones that are maybe more suited to personal use (K702's are pretty much strictly a studio phone, they're really big and not great for travel). They have the AKG 240, which is only about 100 bucks, and is also really nice. Don't expect it to sound nearly on the level of the AKG K702, though.

Sennheiser is also really great stuff. Never owned a pair, but I've heard through them and they're fantastic. They're an all-around hi-fi headphone. They don't really specialize, they're just good everywhere. Like the K702's are more focused on highs and mids, sennheisers are just good everywhere, but they lack a specialty.

A lot of it comes down to personal taste, really. Depends on what kind of music you listen to, exactly how much detail you want to here and where in the range you want to hear it, how detailed the music actually IS, all that stuff.

Denon is another company that delivers high quality audio equipment, even tho you don't see them posted often in threads like these.
I own a pair of the top-of-range earbuds they distribute and based on that i'd be surprised if their on ear headphones doesnt deliver some of the best quality your money can buy as well :)

Thanks, I'll look into the first pair you mentioned and I had a feeling about the Beats and thought it would be something like that.

What sorta music you listen too?? This is really important when choosing the right pair of headphones :)

I currently have the Senheisser HD598's and these are very very good for the price I paid ($180). I've heard good things about AKG-702's, but heard you might need to run them through a amp for the best outcome.

The HD598's are open headset... so you'll get really "precise" sound, but your lows (bass) will be lacking... now I say lacking cause the bass is there, but you don't get the thud (the 598's have very precise bass but not "hit/kick" in the bass) Also open headphones leak alot of sound so you won't want to use them in public...

Anyways if u tell us your favorite music then it'd be more useful in determining a good pair headphones for you :)

I also have a pair of AKG702's for recording and listening to music and they are simply amazing. I highly recommend them.

^AKGs are badass, but when asking about high quality headphones, it gets really down to specific preference. Noise cancelling vs open backed, more bass vs less bass, how important is soundstage, how important are highs? is midrange (guitars, vocals) your favorite frequency? It depends a lot on what you like to listen to. Preliminary I always recommend: Beyerdynamic DT880s (make sure you get low enough ohms [32/80 maybe]), Audiotechnica ATH-m50, or Sennheiser HD 598s

Pros and cons: The DT880s will give you absolutely the best vocals. They have an amazing soundstage, and are incredibly comfortable. If you like jazz, classical, or maybe classic rock, they're probably your best bet (my friend has a pair, and he likes a wide variety of music which includes electronic. They reproduce electronic reasonably well, but the bass is a tad lacking). The ATH-m50s are studio closed back headphones. Fantastic isolation, good bass, but overall a neutral tonal response. Good all around, but I'd say particularly good for modern music. The sennheisers are fairly similar to the DT880s but they're ultimately cheaper headphones. For the price, the DT880s are my favorite (because of the comfort), but I prefer the sound of my AKG K242s (more neutral, more tamed highs).

One very very important thing to keep in mind is mind your ohms. Do NOT buy some headphones with 250 ohm impedance and expect your iPod to play with it very well. You need amplification if the resistance goes too high.
