Was wondering about that as well. My guess is, since the movie is called "The battle of the five armies" (not the five races, or whatever), they just counted one army of elves, one of dwarves, one of men and two armies of orcs.
this was my thinking as well

.. I was going to ask if anyone else noticed that when Thorin and his company ran out of the mountain to help their fellow dwarfs, he had a shield in his left hand when the camera was pointing straight to his face but when they changed the angle to the side there was no shield. Did anyone else notice this?
i didnt notice it, but goofs like that are pretty common in movies, especially if shooting a scene happens over more than one day.
what bothered me more is that 10 more dwarves run out and suddenly the tide of the battle turns. i get that the exhausted dwarves rallied to the king and renewed their efforts, but that only goes so far... in the book, wasnt it a second army of dwarves that turned the battle or something?
