D2 might of been a great game at one point. But there were always loopholes and hacks. Level 90+ is a days work, so you're left with pvp. Pvp before 1.10 was basically zon vs zon. After, it was thrilling to have enigma and synergies. 4 years later... it's lost all it's edge. There's nothing new, hardly any quests. I've played almost every type of char at one point. Team duels were fun, now I'm barely interested in NvN, which had been my passion of the game. I haven't played any of those games besides d2 and w3, but I could say that I would never pick d2 as a great game. It's a good time passer, and the long-term addiction level is low. The thing is you go on and off it, on when you're bored, off when you realize its the same shit.
Also.. aside from the hacks, d2 has a shit community. It's basically an endorsement for bad manner dueling. It does well in stimulating some sort of fake pride or ego, not so uncommon over the internet.. but really now. Trash will be trash no matter what they do. Losing? not so shameful, not everyone has talent. Losing while using mods/aa/tmc/autotp? If you're going to cheat, at least win, losing even after cheating is unforgivable..
