Not necessarily, by default your "basic combo" ability is mapped to your left click slot, but you can put any ability in there. Some abilities have inherent combos, so you can click it three times before it goes on cooldown, or whatever. Your basic attack has no cooldown, just the animation. Likewise your evasion or first defensive skill is mapped to right click by default.
Some abilities gain special effects when used after other abilities or at a certain point in your basic combo. For example Slayers have a downward strike with a long animation (cancellable) that's sped up if used after an ability or after the fourth attack in your basic combo.
Some abilities have invincibility. Like you said you can just run out of an ability's hitbox but a Slayer's roll also makes them invincible for a few frames, so timing sometimes allows you to stay in range, though most attacks, even if they hit once, will "linger" for a few frames until they hit you or disappear.
tl;dr it's exactly like fucking monster hunter, but it controls more like Dragon Nest.
