The game is not pay to win, you can gather all the enchanting stuff by yourself, it just takes time.

Spend time grinding gold and equipment in game or use the cash shop for items to sell for gold, up to you. If it bothers you that much stick with P2P games only.

This game is not for solo players.
You need to play with or make friends who are willing to help each other out. I can't stress this enough, this game was meant to play as a group.
The game is so much better and enjoyable if you play with friends.
Doing dungeons, battle grounds, mass guild vs guild pvp, skyring championships, etc...
The cash shop is an evil necessity. Tera is completely F2P. The game company has to make $ somehow. They release new content every few months, and patch updates every few weeks.
In all games, there will always be noobs. Who just whine and bitch without putting in the effort. They want easy hand outs. IMO, it's way more rewarding when you earned it.
When I first started out, google and tera forum was my best friend. I researched a lot, looking for best ways to level and farm, so I don't waste my time. I made friends and asked for their opinions/help as well. It's cliche to say this but "knowledge is power." You can always find people who are willing to help out if your polite and respectful.
I did end up using elite, because it was just more convenient. I felt spending $15 a month was justified if I was enjoying it. $15 is like going out for a Movie. I thought of it as my entertainment spending.
I recently quit the game because most of my friends I played with had moved on to other games. We reached end game and got bored.
I ended up with over 500k gold, which I sold most of it on playerauctions, and traded some for fg. I made over $350 on playerauctions alone.
I only played Tera for bout 5month and I had elite for only 3months. So I spent $45 dollars, but made over $350 back.
I didn't play Tera to make $$. The $350 was just a by product of playing the game, and I enjoyed every minute of it.
So my advice is, give it a try, you might enjoy it as much as I have.
And who knows, I might return to it someday. I still have my account and all my gears (end game gears are all account bound).

I don't want to waste time debating what pay 2 win means. But here's the facts: there's a direct correlation between how much money you are willing to spend and how fast you progress in game. You can buy power on the shop directly or indirectly and if you are willing to pour the cash into the game you'll soon be a top dog.
For me thats unacceptable as I want to be on the same level playing field as anyone else, no matter how much money each individual threw at the game.
This is not possible in any mmo. Money is power in real life, as well as games. Money = better gear. It's that simple. Don't listen to people who don't know what they are talking about.
In any mmo, you can pay2win. There are no mmo out there where you can't pay2win because you can just buy accounts, gold, characters, items, ect... Even through d2jsp, you can buy fg and trade fg for items...
