If you die, you lose very little.
Tip: Always store the items you want to keep in your vault! You never know when you'll die.
Also, don't start potting a character unless you feel very confident in your playing ability. I'd advise saving up DEF pots until you get 25, then put them all into your Wizard at once.
If you pot as you find them, it may end up being in vain.
