I'm just not really sure how to start. Is buying gold necessary to be successful?

No, buying gold is not necessary at all. You can use muleaccounts for your needs. And you can buy more vaultspace and char slots with fame in future patches
Start your game by exploring the world while unlocking new character classes. get used to different kind of dungeons and playstyles. Try to memorize items aswell Also, making friends in-game helps out a ton!

Buying gold is useless. Get mules and a muledump. Everything solved. I wouldn't spend on a game unless you want to support them after realizing you've spent a good amount of time on it.
the game is not pay2win. You can get good in a week.

How do you transfer items? And can you have two tabs open with two games running at the same time?
If the answer to my second question is "yes," I guess I know how to transfer.

you will have one vault chest and you can store the item there then pick it up with a different character

Yeah, because I only get one character slot.
So I'd need to be able to transfer between two of my own accounts (I guess).
Haven't gotten to the point where I've found anything worth keeping yet though. My highest character has been an 18 Wizard.

No you have it right. Two different tabs one with the main, or whatever account has the item you want to mule and the mule account.
