It is similar, but once you start playing more you will notice the differences between the two games. One big one for me was the flag layout. BF2 had a nice wide-spread area of flags where as BF3 is much more compact. Solo'ing, if you ever did that with the BF2 heli's, is still possible too. Pretty easy to switch to TV, hit target, and move on. No mounted AA guns, it is all individual and or mobile now. Wake Island isn't as good as it was on BF2, but the other maps are pretty good. Is it worth getting? Yes, especially if you played BF2 and you have a computer that can run the game.
