BF is more a team game than a run and gun game like cod
stick with your squad and just play smart, i.e., dont run around like rambo-that shit just doesn't fly
unless you're me

I just bought BF3, game is pretty sick but I'm terrible at it and have no clue what I'm doing because I've never touched a BF game in my life. Always played COD.
I wrecked the helicopter every time I get in it.
Oh and as far as weapons and shit do I have to just play a lot to unlock mods and shit for guns? Because right now i don't have shit and it sucks.
helicopters are hard to fly, get the basic foot soldier thing down first.
DO NOT play recon, your team will hate you and you will learn nothing about the game
engineer or support is what i would say to start off with, just use whatever gun you like the best. generally the starting gun is good, the ak74u is my favorite engie gun and you start with it when russian, the m27 is my favorite starting support gun. i still use the m27 as its basically an assault rifle with a 45 round mag, but usally use the m4 or a-91 on engie which are later unlocks. c4 is beast, 3 c4 on a tank will wreck it, if its still alive then the guy is going to jump out so be ready for that. support is my favorite, c4 and claymores are alot of fun to play with.
for unlocks on your guns you have to get kills just like in cod. team death match is a good place to learn foot soldier/controls/gadgets. play conquest to play with vehicles, its basically domination and also my favorite game type. rush is okay but usually turns out to be a one sided camp fest so you'll want to have some friends to play with. that being said, your team mates are idiots. move with them, but not near them if you know what i mean. sometimes lone wolfing will do you good, if you're playing conquest and just focus on taking flags from the enemy, you're going to get more points than the guy with 30 kills. don't be that dick sniper that thinks his 4.0 k/d is awesome while he sits on the bottom of the score board with 4 kills
the second coop mission lets you fly a helicopter, find a friend that wont get pissed off because you keep crashing and you'll be golden, keep the controls default. you're going to get wrecked in the jets, it takes 400 points to unlock flares and that is going to be the longest 400 points to earn not even mentioning that you probably don't know how to fly it. only reason i know how to fly it is because the controls are the same as the planes in battlefield 1943 which is an arcade game, and a pretty fun one at that.
k/d ratio means shit in this game
w/l ratio means shit in this game
score per minute is what shows skill in this game
